Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats announced the addition of Cheryl Ann Welsh who will serve as Development Director for the organization. Welsh, who brings with her over 18 years of development experience in both the LGBT and Democratic communities, will begin working with Stonewall this fall.
“We are very excited that Cheryl Ann will be joining Stonewall Democrats, and we know that our members will benefit from her experience and enthusiasm,” said Jo Wyrick, NSD Executive Director. “Her talent and strong background will further solidify Stonewall as the grassroots organization that most effectively bridges LGBT and Democratic politics .”
Cheryl Ann Welsh maintains over 18 years of experience in political programming, development and grassroots organizing within the LGBT and Democratic communities. Welsh served as Deputy Director of the Democratic National Committee's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council (GLLC) during the 2004 election cycle. There, Welsh worked as part of a team which raised more than $8.9 million for Democratic efforts.
“Our families face particular political challenges that are best addressed through an organization like Stonewall which engages politicians at the grassroots level," said Welsh. "I have seen how Stonewall chapters have successfully pushed and partnered with politicians within their local communities in an effort to build victories on the national stage. That is one of many reasons why I am excited to be working with the Stonewall Democrats."
Welsh also served for over six years as a member of the Human Rights Campaign Board of Governors and particularly oversaw tremendous growth for the organization in North Carolina by working closely with state and local LGBT organizations and HRC. Additionally, Welsh chaired the programming committee for the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (NCGLFF) for 5 years and co-chaired the event in 2000 and 2001.
Welsh currently serves as the Business Manager of Birch & Company, the firm of former HRC President Elizabeth Birch. In that capacity, one of Welsh's primary roles is the development management for the firm's charitable partners.
Cheryl Ann Welsh is a native of Durham, North Carolina. A graduate Guilford College, Welsh also worked for over 5 years with the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University and in development for the Durham Arts Council. Cheryl Ann Welsh and her partner, Anita Broccolino, reside in Silver Spring, Maryland.
