Statement on Logo/HRC Presidential Forum

(Friday, August 10, 2007)

Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement following a presidential forum hosted by LOGO television and the Human Rights Campaign:

"Stonewall Democrats across our country watched this forum with excitement as we witnessed how our work has helped to monumentally move the Democratic Party in their support for LGBT issues. Our chapters are ensuring that politicians find working partners who are willing to hold them accountable on policy issues and push them forward towards victory on Election Day. ..

While this forum dramatically demonstrated our progress, it also displayed the challenges that must be faced as we continue to build a more inclusive Democratic Party. It is no longer enough for Democrats to be better on our issues than Republicans. Democrats must be better Democrats. Stonewall Democrats are the ones helping them do that. We know that recycled talking points on marriage are no longer acceptable. We know that our candidates must recognize that sexual orientation is not a choice. And, we know that if we are to find better answers from our politicians we must offer accountability and assistance. This is why our chapters continue to enthusiastically engage Democratic campaigns so that our members may press them on answers, impact their policy, shape their positions and propel our party towards victory."

Laurie McBride - Co-Chair, National Stonewall Democrats Board of Directors (Sacramento, CA)

On Thursday evening, Stonewall Democrats across the country gathered in homes and businesses to organize around the presidential forum. Chapters used the opportunity to communicate the message of Democratic inclusion and the need to further engage politicians on LGBT issues.
