Statement on IA Court Ruling
(Thursday, August 31, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement in response to a ruling by the Iowa District Court for Polk County which recognized that same-sex residents are provided the freedom to marry within the state constitution:
"We recognize that this ruling simply validates the freedom that all Americans should enjoy to marry, commit to responsibility, secure their families and seek full participation in citizenship. Iowans believe in valuing the family. Providing citizens with the freedom to marry values the family by strengthening it through legal responsibilities. We are proud that the platform of the Iowa Democratic Party supports the freedom of Iowans to marry and form stable families. We are hopeful that the Iowa Supreme Court, and our presidential candidates campaigning for the support of caucus voters, will recognize that the state constitution shares this view."
- Steve Driscoll, Co-Chair, National Stonewall Democrats.
The Democratic Parties of California, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon and Washington State support the freedom of same-sex couples to marry while the Democratic Parties of Nebraska, Oklahoma and Vermont officially state their support for civil unions within their party platforms.
