You were wrong on your vote for DADT and there's still time to make it right. We, the undersigned, ask you to vote for repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell for the following reasons:

Sen. Byrd, who proudly served West Virginia for decades said it best to one of his West Virginian constituents before he died, "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell doesn’t change the composition of our armed forces – it merely allows troops to continue to do their jobs without fear of dismissal or blackmailing because of their personal life."
The Pentagon's own 10-month intensive study on the effect of repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) reveal there would be little to no negative impact on troop morale, combat effectiveness or military readiness.
70% of service members surveyed stated that having a gay person in their unit would have a positive, mixed, or no effect on their ability to work together.
69% of service members surveyed in the study believe they have already served with someone who is gay.
92% of those who believe they've served with someone who is gay said their ability to work together was either "very good," "good" or "neither good nor poor".
74% of the spouses of service members who were surveyed said repeal would have no impact on their view of whether their husband or wife should continue to serve.
No other law in this country mandates firing someone because they are gay, lesbian or bisexual.
Repeal would strengthen military readiness. At a time when our armed forces are increasingly strained, DADT has resulted in the discharge of 13,500 service members, including dozens of Arabic linguists and hundreds of people with skills for which the military is experiencing critical shortages.
Approximately 65,000 lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans currently serving in the US Armed Forces—and one million gay veterans – should not be treated as second class citizens.
Repealing DADT would allow the lesbian, gay and bisexual members of our armed forces to continue to do their jobs well without worrying about being fired or blackmailed if someone finds out about their personal lives.
A 2006 Blue Ribbon Commission report found that DADT caused the Pentagon to waste over $360 million in taxpayer funds between 1994 and 2003.
DADT requires gay, lesbian and bisexual service members to hide the truth about who they are, which contradicts the military’s ideals of honesty and integrity.
DADT disproportionately hurts female service members. While women comprise 15% of military personnel, they account for 30% of discharges under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
American troops serve without incident side-by-side with personnel in national security agencies and foreign militaries that do not discriminate based on sexual orientation. 24 countries currently allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in their militaries, including Great Britain, Israel and Australia.
Every report commissioned by the Federal government has concluded that the ban could be lifted without detriment to readiness.
Our military is the most disciplined and professional in the world. When “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is repealed, our troops will react as they normally do to policy changes by their superiors—they will follow orders and continue to do their jobs in an orderly and respectful way.
Congress must pass legislation that repeals DADT now, but it should give the military the time it needs to finish its ongoing study of how best to implement repeal before that change goes into effect.
