The American people have made it clear that health insurance reform is a national priority.
President Obama and our Democratic Party leadership are taking bold action to pass reform. All five Congressional committees with jurisdiction have now delivered bills that vary in scope and focus.
The end result of this process is of great importance to all Americans, but particularly those of us in the LGBT community, who are more likely to be uninsured or under-insured due to employment discrimination and lack of relationship recognition.
Please sign this petition to our party leaders - Speaker Pelosi, DCCC Chair Rep. Van Hollen, Sen. Reid and DSCC Chair Sen. Menendez - demanding comprehensive and LGBT-inclusive health care reform.
Dear Representative Pelosi, Representative Van Hollen, Senator Reid, and Senator Menendez,
We, the undersigned, share your view that comprehensive and progressive health care reform is a national priority.
Under our current health care system, too many people are uninsured and under-insured, and access to health care and outcomes from health care are inequitable.
Private studies have shown that there exist disparities in health, health care access, and health care outcomes between the general population and LGBT people and families. Employment discrimination and lack of government recognition of same-sex relationships both contribute to these disparities.
The health care reform bill must include LGBT-inclusive policies, and in particular, data collection about the relationship between sexual orientation and gender identity and health care access.
Thank you for standing with us and for holding your Democratic colleagues accountable to pass health insurance reform for all Americans.
Sincerely,
