Our Internship Program

Our internship program is designed to train individuals in the skills required for success within political organizing and political advocacy. We seek to develop talents into a skill set desired by political campaigns, government offices and progressive organizations.

National Stonewall Democrats maintains a youth-oriented office where ability determines the scope of experiences available. We reward innovation. Our interns are valued and treated as part of our national office staff. While every internship opportunity includes administrative work, we believe in partnering with our interns to tackle substantive projects. Additionally, we provide our interns with opportunities to attend Democratic and LGBT events and opportunities to interact with party and movement leaders.

National Stonewall Democrats accepts interns throughout the year and creates individual programs that meet the objectives of our applicants. We are currently accepting applications for 2008. We have positions available in the following semesters:

Spring
(Organizing, Development, Communication)

Summer
(Organizing, Development, Communication, Convention)

Fall/Winter
(Organizing, Development, Communication)

For Spring and Fall/Winter internships, National Stonewall Democrats offers both part-time and full-time internships. For summer internships, National Stonewall Democrats only accepts full-time (40 hours/week) interns.



Organizing Internship

Individuals accepted into the Organizing Internship will work closely with a portfolio of chapters across the country to implement their campaign plans, strengthen chapters, and create grassroots change.

Specific projects may include:

- Assisting in managing a Grow to Win chapter’s campaign plan

- Travel opportunities to selected chapters

- Assisting in organizing rallies, speakers, or chapter events

- Assisting in launching Stonewall Young Democrats chapters

- Representing National Stonewall Democrats at coalition meetings

Development Internship

National Stonewall Democrats is seeking interns who are interested in understanding and learning about fundraising. National Stonewall Democrats is unique because we engage in both campaign and non-profit style fundraising. This is not your typical internship. Our interns are responsible for running events, developing email appeals, creating and designing direct mail pieces, and prospecting new donors. If you want to know what it feels like to be a development director, this is the place to be.

Potential projects include:

- Recruiting hosts for a national house party program

- Working with national Democratic leaders to create email appeals

- Accompany the Executive Director or other board members on fundraising meetings

- Working with hosts for regional events

Communications Internship

National Stonewall Democrats is seeking interns who are interested in learning from, and participating in, political communications. Communications interns will develop will be given the opportunity to develop a skill set that centers on journalistic writing, online organizing and press relations. Candidates with a strong background in writing are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities will include:

- Authorship of print publications

- Working with national press contacts and construction of press events

- Management of organizational social networking and multimedia

Convention Internship

This is an internship opportunity that not only connects you to the biggest Democratic events of 2008. National Stonewall Democrats will host our membership convention in Denver, Colorado, immediately prior to the Democratic National Convention. Our Convention intern will be responsible for key parts of both of those conventions and be able to attend both conventions.

Based in Denver, the Convention intern will focus on the logistics of both conventions.

Responsibilities will include:

- Managing and staffing the local host committee

- Recruiting additional convention attendees

- Securing local sponsorships for both conventions

- Managing logistics for trainers, speakers, VIP guests

- Managing the delegate welcoming process

This position will work remotely. Housing will be provided in Denver should the intern be chosen from out of the area.

Qualifications

National Stonewall Democrats is seeking motivated individuals who possess a knowledge and enthusiasm for politics and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender movement.

Candidates should possess solid writing skills, knowledge of basic computer applications (word processing and spreadsheet programs), be adept with use of social networking websites and programs and provide an enthusiasm for work.
