Stonewall Student Leader Reveals Bush Administration Cronyism
This week, HUD Secretary Alfonso Jackson resigned amidst charges of cronyism and corruption. Last summer, Stonewall Democrats student leader Sam Hodge (Truman State University) shared his impressions of Secretary Jackson after their lunch in Washington. At the lunch, Jackson dismissed questions on LGBT policy while spending the majority of their conversation bragging about the perks of his position.
Sam wrote the following for The Huffington Post:

Stonewall Democrats Host Campaign Town Halls
(Tuesday, February 19, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats announced two statewide town hall meetings between the Clinton and Obama campaigns and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities of Ohio and Texas. The forums will be facilitated by National Stonewall Democrats and will be held next Monday, February 25 in Dallas and Tuesday, February 26 in Cleveland.
"Our network of Stonewall Democrats chapters in Ohio and Texas serve as two of the largest Democratic operations in each state," said Jon Hoadley, Executive Director of the National Stonewall Democrats. "The work of these chapters are well-respected by party leaders as their efforts routinely result in victories for fair-minded candidates. However, we know that we must also use the influence of our grassroots advocates not only to elect Democrats but to propel our Democratic candidates into a deeper commitment to LGBT issues. That is why we are proud that the Clinton and Obama campaigns have agreed to directly engage our community once more ahead of the March 4th primaries."
Jon HoadleyExecutive Director
For eight years, we’ve heard President Bush report on the progress of his administration. Unfortunately for LGBT Americans, there has been little effort on behalf of this White House to secure or defend our own liberties.
Now, as we enter this new year, it is time for our community to provide for ourselves our own vision of how we can contribute to a more perfect union – one that is strong and that uplifts the entire American family.
In a year when voters will decide who will next occupy the White House, we must work to ensure that elected is an advocate for all Americans.

We decided to use that as an opportunity to deepen our organizing within the LGBT community, and especially LGBT communities of color."
Letter Responding to Washington Blade Story
The following is a response to an article published on January 24, 2008 in the Washington Blade which referenced the National Stonewall Democrats.
Dear Editor,
Everyone at National Stonewall Democrats was concerned by the emails from 2006 we saw in the Washington Blade story titled "DNC Lawsuit Reveals Black vs. Gay Rivalry". The hurtful and personal attacks in these emails do not represent the views of our organizations or the people we work with. We apologize to Rev. Leah Daughtry, Gov. Howard Dean, and others for these emails. We have already taken corrective action throughout the organization to ensure that it is not repeated.
Can you invest in Stonewall? We work every day to help move Democratic politicians towards fully supporting our community. Al Gore has voiced his support for the freedom to marry. Now, we must work to press others on all the issues which impact our community. Make an impact today by donating to our current efforts.
Al Gore Announces Support for Marriage

Washington, DC - Today, National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement on the announcement of support for same-sex marriage by Vice President Al Gore:
"We applaud Vice President Gore for firmly stating his support for allowing same-sex couples the freedom to marry. It is a position which some would still call courageous, but which a new generation of Americans would call common sense. We continue to work to push Democratic politicians to embrace this position whose legal implementation would only strengthen the American family. Vice President Gore has demonstrated leadership on this subject, and we encourage all Democratic leaders who restrain their consciences out of political expediency to demonstrate their leadership as well."

"The word "friend" is often over-used in Washington as politicians apply it to just about anyone with whom they may agree - or more often, disagree. However, Congresswoman Julia Carson was a true friend to National Stonewall Democrats. Not only was the Congresswoman an advocate for LGBT issues on Capitol Hill, Representative Carson made it a personal priority to attend numerous Stonewall Democrats events - often extending to our members warm hugs and encouraging words. We remember and honor the life and work of our friend, Congresswoman Carson, while we extend to her family, staff and constituents our thoughts and prayers." - Jon Hoadley, Executive Director.

"Democrats in both the U.S. House and Senate support passage of the Matthew Shepard Act (Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act). The Democratic Leadership, which guided this legislation to successful passage in their respective chambers, are now burdened with a moral obligation to see their work completed. The LGBT community acutely experiences the impact of both HIV and AIDS. It was our community which first offered leadership in the face of vast political apathy. It was our community whose work helped educate and challenge the positions of national politicians. Now, it is our community which must again take up our position of leadership as we experience moments of cultural apathy in fighting HIV/AIDS."

Where ignorance responds to that courage with a display of violence, our community must reward courage with a demonstration of commitment."

We strongly urge all Democratic Members to vote for such an amendment because of its strategic and moral importance. It would be unacceptable for any Congressional Democrat to vote against an amendment that restores gender identity protections.

"Minnesota models how Democrats can boldly stand for the values we profess while building success across both the urban and rural electorate," said Jon Hoadley, Executive Director. "Democrats should never let fear distract us from pursuing successful strategies which deliver progress. For over 35 years, the Minnesota DFL has built a statewide majority by never letting anti-gay Republican efforts deter them from their core values and strategic efforts. We applaud Democrats in Minnesota."
Stonewall Democrats Launch United ENDA
(Thursday, October 04, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats and more than 150 groups announced the launch of a united lobbying and advocacy campaign to win passage of the fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), H.R. 2015. United ENDA is a coalition and campaign to build upon the unprecedented solidarity in strategy demonstrated by more than 150 organizations determined to pass the original ENDA.
“National Stonewall Democrats are united in our support for the original ENDA which includes protections for both sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Jon Hoadley, Executive Director of National Stonewall Democrats. "We recognized early that this week would quickly become a tipping point in how our movement organizes and how Democrats interact with our community. We have helped launch United ENDA in order to capitalize on that momentum and ensure that our party is pushed towards a winning strategy to end employment discrimination for working Americans."
Take Action Today on ENDA!
As you may know - Congress recently took a key step towards preserving the original Employment Non-Discrimination Act. We had expected the U.S. House Committee on Education & Labor to take action yesterday on the substitute bill. However, in response to our organizing efforts, the Democratic Leadership decided to postpone action until later this month. This is good news! We have (at best) two short weeks to continue to build our support for the original ENDA.

Stonewall Democrats Stand for Inclusive ENDA
(Thursday, September 27, 2007)
The following statement was released by the Executive Directors of nine national LGBT organizations Thursday morning, in response to the article in the Washington Blade posted Wednesday evening:
Our collective position remains clear and consistent regarding the status of the Employment Nondiscrimination Act. Our organizations oppose the removal of protections for transgender people from ENDA. We would also oppose any bill that did not protect transgender people.
We are shocked and upset that, according to the Washington Blade, influential members of the House of Representatives have apparently made a decision to remove protections for transgender people from the bill. If true, this decision was made without consultation with leaders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
While we don’t doubt the sincerity of Congressional leadership’s intent to take action and be helpful to the LGBT community, we cannot disagree more with this strategy. We will continue to work with LGBT-supportive members of Congress to urge their colleagues to immediately drop this strategy.

Statement on CA Marriage Vote
(Friday, September 07, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement of the passage of the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act (AB 43) by the California Senate:
"We congratulate California Democrats for their overwhelming vote to protect the freedom to marry while safeguarding religious liberty. Our senators have again demonstrated the benefit of a Democratic majority. We hope that our Republican Governor will not choose to take away these freedoms, but instead join with Democrats in legally supporting California families by signing this legislation into law.
The California Democratic Party has a strong record of support for our families, including supporting the freedom to marry within our party platform. We are disappointed that Senator Dean Florez, a Democrat, voted against this vital protection for families. However, we are pleased that Senator Denise Ducheny and Senator Jack Scott chose to change their positions from previous votes to support our party platform and to vote to strengthen families across the state."
- Laurie McBride, Co-Chair, National Stonewall Democrats (Sacramento, CA)

Hate Crimes Legislation Passes House
(Thursday, May 03, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats applauded the passage of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act in the United States House of Representatives. The action quickly drew a premature veto threat from the White House, although the legislation still needs to be approved by the United States Senate. Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats criticized a Democratically-controlled committee of the Arkansas Senate for choosing to advance legislation that would bar same-sex couples from adopting children and serving as foster parents in the state of Arkansas.
"Republicans have diligently pushed this adoption ban as an attempt to divide the people of Arkansas and advance their narrow interests," said Jo Wyrick, Executive Director of the National Stonewall Democrats. "As a Democrat and as a mother, I am ashamed that Senate Democrats in Arkansas have cowered to Republican pressure and failed to defend the principles of the Democratic Party. The action taken by this committee threatens the children of Arkansas and that is why the Stonewall Democrats are working to ensure that Democrats defend families instead of a Republican agenda."

Sunday School Lessons: To Tell the Truth
Jo Wyrick
Executive DirectorMy little third-grade Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC taught me the important lesson that sins of omission and commission are equal in nature. Telling my mom that I had eaten my broccoli, when I had really just nibbled off a taste before scraping it into the trash, could technically be construed as true. However, conveniently leaving out a few key facts actually made my story as much of a malicious lie as telling her a flat-out fib.
I was reminded of that lesson this week when an inflammatory action alert from the Log Cabin Republicans incorrectly warned that Democratic Senator Max Baucus (MT) was prohibiting a piece of pro-gay legislation from moving forward in his role as Chair of the Senate Finance Committee. The alert specifically claimed that Senator Baucus was trying to block the Domestic Partner Health Benefits Equity Act, which would provide tax breaks to businesses offering health care to the domestic partners of their employees.
Oh, how that Sunday school lesson comes in handy now.

The Passionate Pragmatist
Mario Acosta-Vélez is taking steps toward a stronger community
Metro Weekly - January 18, 2007by Will O'Bryan
When the wheels of Washington's gay community are turning, it seems that Mario Acosta-Vélez is never far away. Perhaps it's his presidential post at the city's gay and lesbian political stalwart, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club. Or it could be his position on the D.C. Human Rights Commission. Both posts have put the 37-year-old Acosta-Vélez front and center.
Then again, his past affiliations offered other avenues of community outreach, be it his time as a board member with Genta Latina de Ambiente (GELAAM) or serving as executive director of the Latino Civil Rights Center. It's all just the tip of the iceberg for one of gay D.C.'s most ardent community builders and networkers.

Stonewall Issues Concern over Harold Ford
(Friday, January 12, 2007)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued deep concern over the decision to name former Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. as Chair of the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC). On Thursday, Former Iowa Governor, and presidential candidate, Tom Vilsack announced that he is stepping down of Chair of the DLC while indicating his replacement by Congressman Ford, who possesses a poor record on issues that impact LGBT families.
"Congressman Harold Ford has demonstrated a lack of leadership and judgment on family issues that causes our members great concern," said Joanne Wyrick, NSD Executive Director. "His willingness to lightly amend the U.S. Constitution and to exploit gay families for political gain should alarm Democrats across the country. The Democratic Leadership Council is in need of leadership that supports and affirms all American families."

Response to GOP and Anti-Gay Apologists
(Thursday, October 05, 2006)
Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats released the following statement on the developing scandal regarding the inability of the Republican House Leadership to protect the children of the Congressional Page Program:"This is a scandal about the individual actions of Mark Foley and the overall inaction of the Republican Leadership of the U.S. House of Representatives. I am particularly shocked, as a mother and a voter, at the refusal of Republicans to protect the children under their own care within the page program.
Voters should be appalled by the behavior of Republicans and their anti-gay apologists, who have attempted to blame all parties but themselves for their own actions. It is time for the Republican Leadership, the anti-gay special interests who defend their actions by attacking gay families, and Mark Foley to stop blaming others and finally take personal responsibility for failing the American pubic and jeapordizing the safety of children."

Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats (NSD) responded to the activist ruling by the Washington State Supreme Court which held the state's ban on marriage equality for same-sex couples was constitutional."The American family is strengthened when the legal responsibilities of marriage which protect children, stabilize homes and secure relationships are provided equally to all couples," said Jo Wyrick, NSD Executive Director. "Washington State has an economic and social interest in promoting the stability of the family, and it is stunning that the Washington State Supreme Court would base its ruling on personal opinion rather than on law."

Stonewall Statement on Presidential Press Conference Pushing Discrimination
(Monday, June 05, 2006)
Washington, DC – Today, the National Stonewall Democrats released the following statement on President Bush’s renewed call for discrimination against same-sex couples:“President Bush has demonstrated again that Republicans would rather promote political rhetoric than provide concrete policy that actually strengthens families. This administration has delivered the American family a poor prosecution of the War on Terror, a lack of protection for troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, and no solution to the foster care crises that threatens thousands of vulnerable children. President Bush knows full well that his support for this divisive amendment won’t save it from being rejected again by the U.S. Senate and public opinion. The only reason he campaigns for this amendment is because it is designed by political operatives to scare up a cheap influx of cash into Republican political campaigns already tainted by corruption. By supporting this amendment, President Bush does not protect the institution of marriage, the American family, or even the corrupt campaigns of his Republican colleagues like Katherine Harris. Its not just dirty politics, its disgraceful.”

Washington, DC - Today, the National Stonewall Democrats issued the following statement on the promotion of the federal anti-marriage amendment to a full Senate vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee:"In is immoral for Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to attack the Constitution by sending the anti-marriage amendment to the Senate floor. Republican Chairman Arlen Specter underscores the chronic control that corrupt special interests hold over Senate Republicans. A Democratically-controlled Judiciary Committee would have defended the Constitution by killing this amendment on the spot. Instead, Republicans will once again use this measure to divide Americans for partisan purposes.
