NSD Statement on the Passing of Geraldine Ferraro

National Stonewall Democrats mourns the loss of former Vice-Presidential Candidate Geraldine Ferraro. Ferraro was a pioneer as the first woman vice-presidential nominee for a major party ticket, but also had a distinguished career as a Democrat starting as an Assistant District Attorney in Queens, New York, a member of Congress representing New York's 9th and as an ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission during the Clinton administration.

"Geraldine Ferraro gave all women interested in politics a hope that we could smash the glass ceiling," said Erin Moore, NSD Leadership Council Co-Chair. "She was a fierce Democrat and a role model for us all setting the stage and template for women in politics forever."

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.

National Stonewall Democrats Hails Introduction of Respect for Marriage Act

Democratic leaders in both the US House and Senate introduced the Respect for Marriage Act today. If enacted, the bill seeks to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the discriminatory law that has kept legally-married same-sex couples from over 1100 responsibilities, security and rights that flow from marriage.

National Stonewall Democrats statement on Bexar County Democratic Party Chair Dan Ramos’ offensive comments about Stonewall Democrats

“Three words came to mind when I heard that Dan Ramos had called the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio ‘Nazis’ and ‘termites:’ shocking, deplorable and sad,” said Olga Hernandez, National Stonewall Democrats PAC Co-Chair, and a longtime member of the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio. “I really can’t fathom why Ramos would stoop to such a level, especially against fellow Democrats, and especially since Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio have been such good foot soldiers for the Democratic Party in Bexar County and in Texas.”

“We take the part of our mission that says that we hold Democrats accountable very seriously, and this is one of those moments,” said NSD Executive Director Michael Mitchell. “The actions by Chairman Ramos are reprehensible and serve no purpose but to divide our party. We support calls for his resignation from the Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio, as well as from Boyd Ritchie, Texas Democratic Party Chair.”

Statement by President Obama on the Killing of David Kato

I am deeply saddened to learn of the murder of David Kato.  In Uganda, David showed tremendous courage in speaking out against hate.  He was a powerful advocate for fairness and freedom.  The United States mourns his murder, and we recommit ourselves to David’s work.

Accomplishing Big Things

“We do big things.”

Those four words toward the end of President Obama’s State of the Union typified for me not only the entire speech, but the promise of America. Make no mistake, the work of gaining LGBT equality is a big thing, both in terms of the obstacles we face and the importance of the rights we seek.

One year ago, just a few months after signing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, President Obama said that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell would be repealed on his watch. Last month, I watched as he kept his promise and signed that repeal into law. Last night, he promised that within the year, troops will not have to make a choice between being honest about who they are or serving their country with honor and dignity. I have no doubt that he will keep that promise as well.

Transitions at National Stonewall Democrats

Last Thursday, the National Stonewall Democrats board of directors elected new leadership. Melissa Sklarz (Stonewall Democrats New York), who has been serving as Co-Chair, was reelected to that position. Craig Roberts (San Diego Democratic Club) was elected as the other Co-Chair. Shane Larson (Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, DC), who had been serving as Co-Chair, was elected as Secretary, while Bill Jacobs (Stonewall Democrats of Southern Nevada), who had been serving as Secretary, was elected Treasurer. All were elected to a one year term. We’d like to thank Melissa, Shane, Bill and outgoing Treasurer Chris Massicotte (Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, DC) for their service, and wish the new officers well as they embark on another year leading the NSD board.

Last night, the National Stonewall Democrats PAC elected a new set of officers as well. Olga Hernandez (Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio) was elected to her first term as Co-Chair and Stephen Handwerk (Louisiana Stonewall Democrats) was reelected as Co-Chair to another term. Rich Bailey (Stonewall Democrats of Austin) was reelected to the post of Secretary and Bill Jacobs was elected as Treasurer.

In staff-related news, Communications Director Linsey Pecikonis has left National Stonewall Democrats and has taken a position as the Communications Manager for Equality Maryland (EQMD), the state’s LGBT advocacy group. EQMD is gearing up to head the campaign to make the Free State the next to pass marriage equality in their legislature.

“Linsey has been a great member of the NSD team and we’re going to miss her,” said Executive Director Michael Mitchell. “We’re thrilled that Linsey will be working with Equality Maryland as they head into a very busy time achieving marriage equality there.”

Says Linsey, “Working on NSD’s ElectEquality program – especially with the great organizers of the EqualiTeam – was one of the highlights of my career because of the strength of conviction of our members, our supporters and our community.”
