Rick Perry's One Last Oops!

Texas Governor Rick Perry has ended his bid for the GOP presidential nomination and has endorsed Newt Gingrich. National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis issued the following statement in reaction to the announcement:

"Rick Perry has embarrassed himself repeatedly on the campaign trail and his exit from the campaign is no different. As the final act of idiocy in his quixotic bid for the GOP nomination, Perry chose to endorse Newt Gingrich - a thrice married serial philanderer who demanded an open marriage with one of his previous wives. It just goes to show how closely he holds his much touted 'family values.' Oops!"

Huntsman Exit Signals Retreat of Reason from GOP Primary

In reaction to Jon Huntsman's exit from the Republican presidential nomination contest, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis issued the following statement:

"Jon Huntsman was far too reasonable and thoughtful for the GOP base, but his worst transgression was having served as President Obama's Ambassador to China. The last gasp of bipartisanship has escaped the lips of the Republican Party today. His exit signals the final retreat of reason from the Republican presidential nomination contest.

"Though expected, his tepid and tenuous endorsement of Mitt Romney was underscored by Romney's decision not to bother showing up to receive it. It seems Romney treats his electoral endorsers about as well as he treated the companies he demolished at Bain."

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis put out the following statement:

"The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lives on in the hearts and minds of millions who aspire to see his vision of America fulfilled. Today, we honor the man, his vision, and the extraordinary progress he has inspired.

"With determination, courage, and an unwavering passion for justice, Dr. King insisted we could rise above our differences and find our common humanity in order to build a better society filled with peace and prosperity for all. As we struggle to continue Dr. King's moral legacy, we can only hope to inspire and lead Americans with the same courage and honor that he did.

Maryland State Senate President Attacks Marriage Equality Supporters, Repeats Right-Wing Lies

In an interview with Think Progress, Maryland State Senate President, Democrat Mike Miller, called marriage equality "an attack on traditional families" and repeated anti-gay religious right talking points about the impact of marriage on religious institutions. In response, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis issued the following statement:

Mitt Romney Proves He's No Friend to LGBT Americans

In reaction to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach's endorsement of Mitt Romney, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis issued the following statement:

"Mitt Romney is so craven and desperate to get elected, he has not only accepted, but is proudly crowing over an endorsement by one of the most disgusting ultra-right-wing extremists in the GOP. Kris Kobach, who thinks LGBT equality organizations promote 'homosexual pedophilia,' is tied to the anti-immigration group the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) for which he wrote the Arizona and South Carolina anti-immigrant 'show me your papers' laws. This is the second organization listed as an official hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center that Romney has embraced on his way to the GOP nomination. Romney can't claim to support civil rights while affiliating with groups of the same caliber as the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nation. His wretched attempts to do so show just how frantic he is to pander to all sides of any issue."

Gay Conservatives Mislead New Hampshire Voters; Project False Hope

In the lead up to the New Hampshire primary, gay conservatives are bending over backwards to convince New Hampshire voters the GOP isn't homophobic. First out of the gate was GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia. Last Friday, LaSalvia published an OpEd on Tucker Carlson's The Daily Caller website announcing his personal endorsement of Mitt Romney.

"As if claiming Ann Coulter is 'rarely wrong' wasn't enough to destroy LaSalvia's credibility," said Jerame Davis, NSD Executive Director, "his endorsement of Mitt Romney should seal the deal. I just don't know how anyone can claim to represent the interests of any gay person and deign to endorse a candidate who is sucking up to rightwing hate groups like the National Organization for Marriage. Apparently, LaSalvia only sees one of Mitt Romney's many faces."

The GOP's Jalopy Full of Jokers Sputters on Even Though It's Stuck Driving in Circles

After back-to-back Republican debates prior to the New Hampshire Primary, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director Jerame Davis issued the following statement:

"Not one of these candidates is presidential material and these never-ending debates just reinforce that point over and over again. If they aren't bickering among themselves about who is the most retrograde and regressive and how far back in time they want to take our country, they're dissembling on the grave threat of socialism or equivocating on their anti-gay positions.

"In these most recent debates, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum seemed to be vying for the distinction of having made the most ludicrous statements on LGBT issues. On Saturday, Gingrich made the outrageous claim that the media is trumping up the GOP's anti-LGBT positions to essentially cover up the anti-religious bent of pro-LGBT policies. The absurdity that protecting LGBT Americans from discrimination is fomenting anti-religious bigotry should make anyone's head hurt. It's a straw man argument from a paper tiger candidate.

Republican Spin Machine Hangs LGBT Voters Out to Dry

The Republican spin machine is in full force trying to deflect attention from Newt Gingrich's rejection of a gay voter in Iowa. Gingrich told the man he should vote for President Obama.

National Stonewall Democrats Statement on the Obama Administration's LGBT Equality Initiatives Abroad

National Stonewall Democrats applauds President Obama for issuing a memorandum to federal agencies to address LGBT inequality abroad. The memo directs all federal government agencies to "promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons" and establishes a working group to monitor the progress of the initiative. In addition, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at the US Mission to the UN in Geneva to commemorate the signing of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and devoted most of speech to discussing this new measure. This is the first strategy put forth by any US administration to combat discrimination toward LGBT people outside the United States.
