NSD Board Member Appointed to DC Mayor's LGBT Affairs Office

National Stonewall Democrats would like to congratulate Jeffrey Richardson, NSD board member and Gertrude Stein Democratic Club President, on his appointment as Director of the Office of LGBT Affairs for Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray. Richardson, a well-known LGBT activist in DC, has helped strengthen the Stein Democrats as a powerhouse in the District political scene.

"Jeffrey is a valued and trusted leader in the Stonewall Democrats family and is the perfect choice for the job," said Melissa Sklarz, Co-Chair of the NSD board. "In choosing Jeffrey as his new LGBT liaison, Mayor Gray continues his strong leadership as a pro-equality Democrat. We need someone like Jeffrey as we head into a Congress with a GOP-led House that will likely start making moves to limit or kill marriage equality in the District through the appropriations process.”

“We wish him great success in his new role.”

Statement by National Stonewall Democrats regarding today’s vote by the GOP-led House to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

“The GOP has yet to show the American people a plan to reform health care that lowers costs and puts patients first, but they have all the time in the world, apparently, to repeal a commonsense, popular law,” said Michael Mitchell, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director. “As expected, the GOP-led house voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act in a display of showmanship for the anti-government sliver of their base, and as a nod to big insurance companies who pad their campaign coffers.

“Left out of the equation are literally millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions that would be excluded, millions of young people who will be knocked off their parent’s insurance and the taxpayers who will have to foot the estimated $145 billion tab if the law is repealed.

“Also left out are LGBT people with pre-existing conditions who are not able to access the insurance plans of their partners, which they would be able to do if our relationships were recognized.

“Three Democrats – Mike Ross (AR), Dan Boren (OK), Mike McIntyre (NC) – unfortunately voted with the Republicans. We will remember.”

Statement by National Stonewall Democrats and the Southern Arizona Stonewall Democrats on the Shooting Today at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Event

“We at National Stonewall Democrats are shocked at the news of the shooting at an event involving Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-8),” said NSD Executive Director Michael Mitchell. “We know that an act like this affects an entire community and we are holding all the parties affected in our thoughts and prayers at this incredibly difficult time.”

House Passes DADT Repeal Bill

As reported by Chris Geidner for Metro Weekly:

NSD: "Battle for DADT Repeal Has Been Hard Fought and Hard Won"

Michael Mitchell, Executive Director of National Stonewall Democrats said on the day President Barack Obama signed Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal into law:

"With the repeal of DADT, not only will 17 years of forced silence, investigations and discharges soon come to an end for LGBT troops, but so will institutionalized discrimination based on sexual orientation that goes back to the beginning of our military. Implementation of repeal won’t likely be a perfect process and it won’t be quick, but for the first time in the history of our great nation, being open about one’s sexual orientation won’t be a roadblock to military service.

NSD: Despicable “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Finally Repealed

Michael Mitchell, Executive Director of the National Stonewall Democrats comments on the Senate's passage to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell":

“As Americans, we can be proud that integrity and justice are the big winners today, not partisan politics...Finally, we continue to be deeply appreciative of the brave women and men in uniform who currently serve and have served our country, some at incredible sacrifice, who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We know the heavy burden that serving silently has been for them and we are humbled by their service under such difficult circumstances. We have been honored to have been able to fight for them in our own way – as they fight and have fought for our country.”

Statement by the President on the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010

President Obama on the Senate's successful cloture vote on don't ask, don't tell; "By ending “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love."

NSD: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Finally On Solid Path to Repeal

“With the vote for cloture on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell finally accomplished, the Senate must now finally repeal of the discriminatory law.”

Statement by Michael Mitchell, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director:

“Overcoming incredible obstructionism by Republicans, the Senate has finally reached cloture on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and we can now go to a simple majority vote on a law that almost 80% of Americans want to see come to an end.

“We call on the Senate to finish the job and repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell with all due haste.”

Statement by Michael Mitchell, National Stonewall Democrats Executive Director, on the Failure of the Senate to Pass the DREAM Act

“With the failure of the DREAM Act today, the dreams of citizenship for undocumented youth who were brought here while they were young have been painfully put on hold. National Stonewall Democrats supported the DREAM Act because many of those youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, but also because it made sense for America, not least of which for military recruitment. It also would have had the added benefit of reducing the deficit by over a billion dollars.

“No amount of xenophobia – because that’s what killed the DREAM Act – can change the fact that America is mostly a country of immigrants. The DREAM Act was a path to citizenship for young people, many of whom have only known this country as their home. It’s shameful that access to citizenship and a chance to achieve the American dream have been thwarted by ideologues.”
