Statement
from Michael Mitchell, Executive Director, National Stonewall Democrats:
“As Senators begin debate on the
reconciliation package to the historic health care reform passed by the House over
the weekend, they must not be side-tracked by Republican amendments that are nothing
more than transparent stalling tactics.
“As we saw yesterday when Senate
Republicans stopped the business of the Senate in its tracks, they are prepared
to do whatever it takes to obstruct passage of the reconciliation bill –
including trying to attach amendments which would force the bill back to the
House for another vote. Though the amendments might not be objectionable
individually, every amendment is a step towards derailing this important
reform.
“A ‘NO’ on amendments is a ‘NO’ on
obstructionism and a ‘YES’ on historic health care reform.
“Like all Americans, lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender people and their families stand to benefit greatly
from this bill which will cover 32 million additional Americans. In its first
year, this law will bar insurance companies from denying coverage to children
with pre-existing conditions, offer tax-credits to small business who cover
their employees, and start to close the Medicare donut hole. We must not let
these important reforms get lost because of wrong-headed obstructionist tactics
of Senate Republicans.”
