Democratic State Sen. Bill Perkins is slated to pick up the endorsement of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer today in his bid to hang on to his seat in the 30th SD, which includes Harlem, the Upper West Side, East Harlem, Morningside Heights and Washington Heights, the Daily Politics has learned.
“I thank Borough President Stringer for this endorsement and the work he does everyday for the people of our city," said Perkins. “My campaign is getting a great reception every place we go. This is another sign of the momentum we are feeling as we build a large and diverse grassroots campaign that is moving this campaign forward.”
In the last two weeks, Team Perkins notes the incumbent has scored "endorsement votes from grassroots groups including Broadway Democrats, Three Parks Independent Democrats, Democracy for New York City, Stonewall Democrats, Park River Independent Democrats, Community Free Democrats and virtually every major club in the district is carrying petitions for his re-election."
Perkins, who has been a lightning rod for pro-charter school groups and parents, faces a primary challenge from insurgent Basil Smikle, a political strategist who has worked closely with Hillary Clinton and served as an advisor to Mayor Bloomberg's 2009 re-election campaign.
Update: Smikle responds.
"Incumbents support each other. So it seems that either Mr. Perkins is a true insider or his campaign could use the help," Smikle said. "People are thirsty for change and want to be in control of their Senate seat again."
