White House Square 1

President Barack Obama recently appointed a lesbian to serve as a regional director in the White House Office of Political Affairs, according to the National Stonewall Democrats.

Campbell Spencer, the new appointee, started her role as director of the office’s Midwest desk a couple weeks ago and will act as a liaison for the region’s Democratic governors and state Democratic parties.

During the presidential campaign, Spencer was a national co-chair of Obama’s LGBT steering and policy committee. She also has worked on the unsuccessful presidential campaigns of Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. She was director of LGBT outreach and base vote director for the Democratic National Committee.

An August statement from the Obama campaign says Spencer “has been fighting for LGBT equality” since she campaigned against the marriage ban in Hawaii in 1998. She has worked as a field organizer for the Human Rights Campaign and served as a senior strategist for One Iowa, a statewide LGBT activist group.

John Marble, spokesperson for the National Stonewall Democrats, said Campbell is “a tremendous, and rather dynamic, addition” to Obama’s team.

"For those of us who know Campbell, we can easily see why her experiences as a strategist and effective communicator were sought out by the White House,” he said. “President Obama and our nation will greatly benefit from her public service."

Spencer was not immediately available for comment.
