National Stonewall Democrats has endorsed the One Nation Working Together March in Washington, DC on October 2, 2010 and encourages our members to participate.

One Nation Working Together is a social movement of individuals and close to 300 endorsing organizations committed to putting America back to work and pulling America together. Coming from a diverse set of backgrounds, experiences, beliefs and orientations, we are determined to build a more united country with good jobs, equal justice, and quality public education for all.

We’re very pleased that AIDS Walk Washington, which happens the morning of October 2, has endorsed the march and will encourage their people to feed into the march after their closing ceremonies end around 10:45 am. If you’d like to participate in AIDS Walk Washington, they are offering a 25% discount for registration. (Use discount code: ONWT.) We’ll be meeting at their closing ceremonies and walking to the Lincoln Memorial for ONWT together.

As we coordinate things, it would be good for us to know who of our Stonewall family is coming to town so we can make the trip easier for you and get you connected to the events. AIDS Walk Washington takes place Saturday, October 2, prior to the One Nation Working Together March, and begins and ends at Freedom Plaza. TO MEET US DURING AIDS WALK CLOSING CEREMONIES: After the AIDS Walk, the LGBTQ and Youth contingents for One Nation Working Together will march as one delegation to the rally. We hope you will join us there to support the AIDS Walk Washington closing ceremonies. Meet us at 10:00AM on Pennsylvania Ave between 13th & 14th, NW. TO MEET US AFTER AIDS WALK: If you cannot meet us at Freedom Plaza, Stonewall folks will be meeting at 11:15AM 100 yards due west of the Washington Monument by 14th St., SW between Constitution Ave NW and Independence Ave SW. Look for someone holding a blue Stonewall Demorcats sign. We'll be there until 11:45AM, and then we'll walk as a group towards the march, which is only a few minutes away. By Metro: Take the Blue/Orange Line to Smithsonian Station.

A few things to note:

We highly encourage everyone to buy their Metro fare cards before getting underground. Metro will have a van stationed at RFK Stadium on Saturday morning, selling $3.70 fare cards. That is the fare for round-trip between Stadium-Armory station and either Smithsonian station or Foggy Bottom station (the 2 closest Metro stations to the Lincoln Memorial). This above-ground sales facility is equipped to handle bulk sales preferably, so try to coordinate with a group beforehand. A reported 15,000 people never made it to the Glenn Beck march because of the extremely long lines waiting to buy fare cards in the Metro. We need you at the march, so please buy your passes early!
There are steering committees for ONWT in most major urban areas within a 12-hour driving radius of DC. Literally thousands of busses are being reserved to bring people to Washington for the march. If you’d like to get on one of them, contact the steering committee in your area and/or go to the ONWT website for more information. There’s also place there with a clearing house for seats on march busses.
ONWT organizers are recommending that you don’t plan on driving into the District that day and trying to find parking, but rather that you park at a Metro stop and take the Metro in. If you do drive in and park in a Metro parking lot, you will need a DC Metro SmartCard with enough money to get out of the parking lot when you leave; money is not accepted in the parking lots.
It’s likely there will be an LGBT specific event – which will include a sign making party – on the night before the march for those folks who are in the night before.

Feel free to bring rainbow flags and the like to ONWT, but know that the Park Service forbids sticks, poles and other things that could be used as weapons. Small flags on little sticks (less than about 10 inches) are fine.
