Dwyer Consequences

Dwyer Demonstrates his Feelings
Towards an Indepenent Judiciary

Maryland Republican Delegate Don Dwyer is once again proving how much of a jerk he is. Dwyer, long-obsessed with all things gay, is now trying to impeach a judge who ruled that barring marriage equality for same-sex couples does not conform with the state constitution. Dwyer introduced his resolution on the House of Delegates floor yesterday.

"Its a crazy, crack-pot idea. IIssuing a ruling whose outcome is not what one lawmaker would like it to be is not an impeachable offense," is what I told PlanetOut/Gay.com yesterday. "Republicans have been throwing a temper-tantrum ever since Democrats blocked their efforts to put a statewide ban on same-sex marriage before the voters. And we can expect continued hissy fits until the Legislature adjourns for the year."

I was in an ornery mood.

A two-thirds vote in the House and Senate is required to remove a judge in Maryland. It won't happen. Over a dozen Democratic delegates turned their backs and walked out of the chamber as Dwyer read his resolution. Delagate Maggie L. McIntosh, a Baltimore Democrat who is openly gay, told the Baltimore Sun that Dwyer’s resolution an “affront to both the government and the constitution. “If every time one of us in the legislature disagreed with a judge’s opinion, can you imagine what it would do to our government?” she said.
